Location:
Da Nang and Phan Rang (First tour)/Tan Son Nuht (Second Tour)

Comments:
I was "Permanently TDY" to Da Nang with the 311th ACS out of Phan Rang. In those days I was a prop mechanic. I lived in Gunfighter Village, upstairs in the barracks that had a small BX and barber shop downstairs. I hung out with Thomas P. Wyantt, Jr from N.J. and Smith (both of whom worked in the 366th sheet metal shop), Calvin Yip (also a prop mech), Tilly (also up from Phan Rang and to whom I paid $20 to learn a card trick), Crma (an aircraft electrician for whom I always wanted to buy a vowel), Harding (or Harder) from the 12th ACS Ranch Hands (he was in my class at tech school also) and Capt. Moe, our maintenance officer. LtCol Joe Jackson (who was awarded the Medal of Honor) was our detatchment commander.

When I was first assigned there, I went to the 20th TASS and lived in the 8 man hootches. There, Jerry Mack from Cobbtown, Ga (also a classmate from tech school) and I built a small moonshine still. You had to be 21 to buy hard liquor.

Sigh...nostalgia just isn't what it used to be

Comments:
I returned as a civilian contractor with LSI Service Corp. First at Vung Tau, then to Danang. We worked on the Armys little Ru6's-Ru8's, etc down by the Marines. (I had a brother there in the USMC C-130 outfit, so life was good)
I had requested an assignment to Can Tho, guess this was in June 68, thereabouts.
We were watching the USAF Phantoms land on the runway nearest us, turn off and wait to cross the other one.
One had just pulled off and the PSO was raising his canopy. It raised alright. It flew off of the plane and the seat came right behind it.
The ole Martin Baker operated as advertised. Unfortunately, the altitude was not enough. Dead.
The folks that say, say the plane went through some violent evasive actions over the north. PSO let his flash light get away. It jammed between the canopy actuator rod and the firing doohicky.

Does any one remember this incident? I would like to know what squadron.
Could have been in May or July, 68.

Had the scenic tour making it to DaNang, Takhli and Udorn all in the 4 TFS. Takhli may have been quiet but the hooches were a lot better at DaNang. After we got to Udorn, that "politically correct" wing king there made us remove the teeth from the jets. That was a real nice greeting for us and we kind of maintained our distance from the jerk until the cease fire in Jan 73. Hell of an "end the war" party though, the 4 TFS managed to get thrown out of the O' Club bar three times that night.

Does anyone remember a jeep (M151A1) painted white on or near the airstrip in Danang? It was driven by Frank Achille an employee with Pan American who was, I believe, a civillian air traffic controller there. Well, I own that jeep and was looking for ANY photos of it anywhere on the flight line. There is a picture of it unrestored if you click on my website above, if anyone needs something to refresh their memory. It's wartime hood numbers (before it was painted white) was T 33672.

Oh yeah, and I already found a guy who was perimeter control on the airbase. Not sure what unit he was in etc. but he is a fellow military jeep restorer's brother.

I was looking for my brother Ernest H. Bolton and came across your website with his name. Just wanted to let you know that I have a feeling the Sgt Ernest H. Bolton you have listed was my father who was in the Air Force all of his adult life. My brother was only 20 years old in 1970 and I don't believe he was in Vietnam. He was also in the Air Force. In any event, my father died in January of 2002 at the age of 78 from complications following heart surgery. If you are indeed looking for my brother, please let me know and I will give you any information I have.

Tom, thanks for letting me know about this sight. I worked at the AGE shop kind of across from the 1st Shirts office. Later went to the Aeroport side to "take care of" the Light-alls used on the perimeter. The units were so damaged the only way to get them from point A to point B was front end loader.

Sorry:
I had no knowledge about any other resource to find help.
I am looking for someone who was there April 25-27,69.
Someone who knows how to access Flight Manifests of outgoing Flights. It's such a blurr for me; I hope to verify if I was on the last outgoing Flight; or which one? I also hope to find a message board to post my request.
Thanks for any help!: Greg
