Great site, ran out of time looking at all the great photographs of the past. Wow it's been 39 years. Seems like a dream blended with some night sweats. Lost good friends and America's finest. It's now mostly dreams of times past, never forgotten, but sometimes not sure it happen.
Always remember July 14, 67 when the base got rocketed and the Air Force Ammo Dump went up. I was in my fighting hole on the flight line.
Thanks for the documented memories, sometimes I think it was all just a bad dream until I see the pictures. Look forward to returning and looking at some more later. God Bless you guys..

I lived in Camp DaNang 3 buildings from the base Hospital. We played volleyball out in the back between the other barracks and the outdoor latrines. We also had an outdoor movie called the "skeeter flick" that showed movies at night. I was in the A.F., so we weren't allowed off base even to see the Bob Hope Show. Some Officers were allowed to go, but I was a newly "promoted" Buck Sergeant when the changed the rank from A1C to Buck Sgt. I worked in the Supply Squadron orderly room. Our Commander was Lt. Col. Schmidt. Our 1st Sergeant was was SMSgt Gudmunson, who was a riffed Lt. Col. I didn't know why he was riffed then, but now that I am older and remember him, he was just plain stupid, and it amazes me that they would even let him come back in as a SMSgt. Of course, he was from the old Air Force days, no doubt, one of the guys from the "brown shoe" days. The old Army Air Corps kind of left overs from WWII when to be an officer, all you had to do was spell your name right. He was one of those.

We got hit several time when I was there, but it got worse in 1969. Five of my friends were killed in a rocket attack in June 1969. I had already left in April. I can still remember DaNang as clearly as today. I can remember every single day of that long, long year, and the memories will never go away. It is the only thing I can clearly remember in full color and sound. To this day, I still have nightmares about DaNang. Not because I was ever in any danger, but because the whole experience was so unbelievable. Every thing about DaNang was like being in Hell on earth, and all I did for 365 days was drink myself to sleep at night just so I wouldn't hear people yelling and talking all night long in the barracks, not to mention the F-4S that were right across the street from us taking off every 6 seconds, day and night. That one year of my life has had more impact on me than all the other years of my life combined. And for what. Absolutely NOTHING. We just left Vietnam with our tails between our legs. What a tragic waste of time, and even more tragic was the needless death of anyone who died over there. Because they died for nothing. I would NEVER go back there even to visit. That place haunts me to this day. We left 57,000 of our best over there while our politicians played with their lives for their own personal gain. If we are sent to war, let's go there and do it until we are done. Our politicians and our left wing cry babies from schools like Stanford where they had mommie and daddy paying their school tuition let us die over there for nothing. I am still mad about that 35 years later. Now my son is in the A.F. I pray for him and everyone who is on active duty in harms way. Thanks for listening to me. I hope to hear from some friends out there. Joe
