I worked in the caged warehouse area in the Avionics building on the 3-11 shift. Lived in Gunfighter Village. Saw a lot of movies for 35 cents(I think). I remember going to the "roach coach" to buy food. Ate a lot of rice and hot dogs at the chow hall. A year seemed like a long time then, but looking back it flew by. China Beach-what a great place.

Would like to hear from anyone who was at Da Nang during the month of Apr 70. The Da Nang Military Complex recieved a series of rocket attacks starting 1 Apr and continued for several days in a row. There was a short break and then the attacks continued for a few more days. These attacks were never recorded through AF history for unknown reasons. I would like to change that and will need some help. I have been in contact with our Viet Nam Security Police Assoc. historian who has also verified there is no documentation. I know it has been many years past and how memories can fade but I will never forget seeing the launch sites and calling them in on my radio. The joke was, it never happened because it was Apr Fools Day. Some even went directly overhead and could be visually seen enroute to the air base and impacting. If anyone could help me with any type of documentation, old letters, CSC desk blotter reports, photos, ect, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and Welcome Home.

Stationed on GunFighter side flying FE position on HH3E ( Nitnoy's ) right by Air America 's Operation.. Air America had snack bar ( shack with mud floors ) waiting for cheeseburger to be cooked looking at cook behind counter as mud squeezed out between her toes. Had to look away BUT was the best tasting burger ever.. Later 71-72 they made us move to Marine side of Da Nang by base operations flying as FE on HH53's. THAT SUCKED The rats in the barracks were as big as cats. Best thing was we were within feet of the outdoor movie which were free and shown the best and latest movies.. For some reason I hated the Marine side. Seemed like we lost more crews and Jollies while on that side of Da Nang.. Really enjoyed it at new years when idiots with a gun fired it into the air. Sat with steel pot and flack vest on my head sipping home made egg nog for seemed like hours until all the drunks either ran out of amunition or their trigger finger got tired..Often wondered what happened to the shell of C130 off the side of the taxiway that a family had moved into it. Anyone else remember it? Wish I had pictures of it..

Comments:
A very interesting site. Brought back many fond (and some not so fond) memories. I still have much to review on the site. After looking at some of the mortar and rocket damage I was struck by a statement of the General Counsel of the VA in one of his precedent decisions (legal statement that affects veteran benefits)that many of the guys who were wounded or killed as a result of enemy action directed at the base were not "engaged in combat with the enemy."See Department of VEterans Affairs "VAOPGCPREC 12-99" It appears that if you just sat back and let the rockets or mortar fire land on your head or thereabout you were not engaged because "engaged in combat with the enemy " requires that the veteran have taken part in a fight or encounter with a military foe or hostile unit or instrumentality." Interesting concept but hardly fair to all who were on the receiving end of the VC and NVA frequent and regular visits to DaNang.
